Holiday at Hollybrook House, Co Sligo 1938
My grandfather's brother, Edgar Smith and their mother had Hollybrook House during the 1930s and ran it as an hotel.
This is a film of my family and others on holiday there in (I think) 1938. The film begins with the family car being loaded onto the ferry at Liverpool.

This is from the brochure for the hotel:
"Hollybrook ... 14 miles from the sea, in Co Sligo between Connemara and County Donegal. Formerly the old home of the ffolliott family, it is the scene of Carleton's novel "Willy Reilly and his Colleen Bawn".
"It is beautifully situated on the west shore of Lough Arrow, and now adapted to meet the needs of an Hotel, offers many attractions to the sportsman, ant...

Probably filmed in the late 1940s or early 1950s. This is probably footage of an Isle of Man TT. If anyone has any better information then please let me know and I'll add it here. Begins with the bikes passing the Ginger Hall in Sulby. Then footage of them passing the old town hall at Parliament Square in Ramsey - passing Raymotors and off towards the mountain. Ends with 1 sec of the old bungal...

Mrs Helen Maddrell (Isle of Man) demonstrating carding and spinning wool. (This was definitely filmed in 1938 - I have a letter written by her inviting my Grandfather to tea. And a letter from him in which he refers to the film of her spinning.)

I don't know when this was filmed. It might be the late 1940s since my Grandfather, who shot this footage, lived on Ballanard Road for a few years immediately after WW2.

A ship passing Maughold Lighthouse on the Isle of Man. Filmed in 1938. Keristal writes: "I'm certain the ship passing Maughold Head is Tynwald IV .. launched in December 1936 .. torpedoed & sunk at Bougie, Algeria 12.11.1942"

Isle of Man Air Services G-ADVK at Ronaldsway airport, Castletown, Isle of Man. The aircraft is a De Havilland DH86 Express. Loaf pointed me towards the Civil Aviation Authority online database which lists this plane as an 86B.

IOM - various footage

Probably filmed in 1938, this begins with footage of Laxey including the Laxey Wheel (The Lady Isabella). A friend has pointed out that this sequence also possibly includes shots of an older abandoned water wheel near Laxey (any information received I'll add here). There are some shots of the mill wheel on the bend at Baldrine. Also - a 'mollag' (as pointed out by Tempus Fugit).

This was probably filmed in 1938. This footage is mostly of Douglas which is the capital of the Isle of Man. Begins with various shots of IOMSPCo vessels. Includes people dancing on the beach and TT grandstand footage.

Landing and salting fish at Peel on the Isle of Man. Filmed on 16mm. Probably in 1938. Polskimann noticed his great grandfather's fish van in this footage.
Ahhhh! The days when everyone looked out for each other…..now we have to look out for “ others” ! now, we look out
I can well understand why, as a little girl, my mum never liked the boat trips over to Liverpool. No stabilisers.
Some tremendous footage here. With modern technology they could improve the Quality AND add Colour. 😆
A jewel set in the Irish Sea.
1.11 that's my great grand dad! Looks like my dad.
Awesome! Is Mrs Maddrell really this fast, or is this due to the film? I card, comb and spin, but will never achieve her tempo! Thanks a lot for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing these films. My father was from the Isle of Man. He would have known all of these places and would have been able to tell me all the stories about them. I wonder if one of those cottages was his mother's. I wish he was still here to tell me. He would have loved watching this. What a beautiful place.
thanks for sharing!
its amazing how much has changed and how much is still the same
Definitely, definitely the IOM TT. I recognise Ramsey and the Bungalow.
very good
I stood on this spot only 3 days ago.It is a beautifull place is the ship an old packet boat ?Also the fog horn looks very similar to the ones at point of ayre. I agree with jeri good video.

thank you for posting these wonderful old movies. social history by real people - I bet your grandfather would of loved you tube.
Awesome old video, this is so cool and I am spinning on an old ashford spinning wheel,
This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing it. I also found it really informative, as I'm learning to card!
The Travelling marshal is Bertie Rowell, a former MGP rider, the machine is probably an Ariel Square 4
thank you! a very athmospheric video and one whch also gives the real technical details. From when is it and from where?
Thank You! For those of us who try to preserve "the old ways", it is wonderful to actually see techniques used - not just to learn from modern methods. Marty Mc
Thanks for letting us see this old piece of film! I found it fascinating. I noticed she is using what I have always thought of as a Shetland style wheel, where the brake band goes across a string between the two maidens. I do hope it is the old style film that is speeded up a bit - she doesn't really card THAT fast does she? THanks again - Amanda (ADHUK)
The second steam packet boat seems to be Ben-my-Chree or Lady of Mann. The final shot is either St Seriol or St Tudno of Merseyside & North Wales Steamships, probably returning to Llandudno on a day trip
that was so great. thank you very much for sharing this video.
Last second or so looked like the bungalow, interesting piece of film, shame it wasn't longer,Blondie luvly.
No - it's Ramsey
Raining then too! Nice blonde bird at start of clip!!
WOW, so THAT'S how they did carding! Books don't explain it very well. Thanks so much for posting this educational spinning and hand-carding video!!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful. It is almost certainly right after the war. I could be in this film, sitting on my father's shoulders in the crowd on the opposite side of the road.
