Holiday at Hollybrook House, Co Sligo 1938
My grandfather's brother, Edgar Smith and their mother had Hollybrook House during the 1930s and ran it as an hotel.
This is a film of my family and others on holiday there in (I think) 1938. The film begins with the family car being loaded onto the ferry at Liverpool.

This is from the brochure for the hotel:
"Hollybrook ... 14 miles from the sea, in Co Sligo between Connemara and County Donegal. Formerly the old home of the ffolliott family, it is the scene of Carleton's novel "Willy Reilly and his Colleen Bawn".
"It is beautifully situated on the west shore of Lough Arrow, and now adapted to meet the needs of an Hotel, offers many attractions to the sportsman, ant...

Probably filmed in the late 1940s or early 1950s. This is probably footage of an Isle of Man TT. If anyone has any better information then please let me know and I'll add it here. Begins with the bikes passing the Ginger Hall in Sulby. Then footage of them passing the old town hall at Parliament Square in Ramsey - passing Raymotors and off towards the mountain. Ends with 1 sec of the old bungal...

Mrs Helen Maddrell (Isle of Man) demonstrating carding and spinning wool. (This was definitely filmed in 1938 - I have a letter written by her inviting my Grandfather to tea. And a letter from him in which he refers to the film of her spinning.)

I don't know when this was filmed. It might be the late 1940s since my Grandfather, who shot this footage, lived on Ballanard Road for a few years immediately after WW2.

Probably filmed in 1938, this begins with footage of Laxey including the Laxey Wheel (The Lady Isabella). A friend has pointed out that this sequence also possibly includes shots of an older abandoned water wheel near Laxey (any information received I'll add here). There are some shots of the mill wheel on the bend at Baldrine. Also - a 'mollag' (as pointed out by Tempus Fugit).

I can well understand why, as a little girl, my mum never liked the boat trips over to Liverpool. No stabilisers.

Awesome! Is Mrs Maddrell really this fast, or is this due to the film? I card, comb and spin, but will never achieve her tempo! Thanks a lot for sharing.

Thank you so much for sharing these films. My father was from the Isle of Man. He would have known all of these places and would have been able to tell me all the stories about them. I wonder if one of those cottages was his mother's. I wish he was still here to tell me. He would have loved watching this. What a beautiful place.

Thanks for letting us see this old piece of film! I found it fascinating. I noticed she is using what I have always thought of as a Shetland style wheel, where the brake band goes across a string between the two maidens. I do hope it is the old style film that is speeded up a bit - she doesn't really card THAT fast does she? THanks again - Amanda (ADHUK)

The second steam packet boat seems to be Ben-my-Chree or Lady of Mann. The final shot is either St Seriol or St Tudno of Merseyside & North Wales Steamships, probably returning to Llandudno on a day trip
